Teacher PD Workshop – African-American Studies Mandate

Holocaust Education in Support of Black History Month and Florida’s African-American Studies Mandate

Florida law requires both Holocaust education and teaching about the history and contributions of African-American people to society.  We believe that these endeavors need not stand alone.

On Sunday, February 23^rd, the Holocaust Center will conduct a professional development workshop for teachers to explore the many ways that these twin mandates support each other to create uniquely enriching opportunities for students across grade levels and subjects.

Teacher Participants will be eligible for three points of inservice credit.

Featured speaker:  Dr. Patrick Coggins

Dr. Patrick Coggins is an expert in the field of Cultural Diversity and Multicultural Education. He currently serves as chair of the Faculty Senate, is a member of the president’s Cabinet of Stetson University, and served as a Jessie Ball DuPont Endowed Chair Professor from 1991-2011. He is a member of the Florida Education Commissioner’s Task Force on Holocaust Education.

Workshop focus:

Dr. Coggins will emphasize the significant contributions of African-American, Hispanic, and Jewish women to the modern world. Teachers who focus on the stories of these inspiring women will address the requirements for four of Florida’s educational mandates (Holocaust Education, African-American History, Hispanic and Women’s Contributions to the U.S.)

The workshop will demonstrate practical lesson ideas, activities, and strategies to help students explore questions such as:

• How did the events of World War II and the Holocaust impact the young leaders of the emerging Civil Rights Movement? How were African-American soldiers who fought against Nazi Germany inspired to continue the fight against racism at home?
• How did some Holocaust survivors support the Civil Rights Movement in America?
• What features were shared by Nazi antisemitic propaganda and racist propaganda from the U.S.? What lessons can be learned from these commonalities?
