Keynote Presenter: Yitta Halberstam
Topic: Small Miracles
Yitta Halberstam, co-author with Judith Leventhal, of Small Miracles of the Holocaust (Lyons Press, 2008) will be the guest speaker at the 2009 Yom HaShoah Commemoration event. There are over 2 million copies of the Small Miracles series in print and it has been translated into 14 languages.
Halberstam is the daughter of Holocaust survivors. She pursued graduate studies in American Literature at New York University and taught Literature of the Holocaust at Baruch College. She has worked as a newspaper reporter and has been published in numerous magazines. She is the author of Holy Brother: Enchanted Tales and Inspiring Tales about Rabbi Shlomo Carlbach.
In her book Halberstam reveals that there were some rays of light during the Holocaust: inexplicable events in which human lives were spared, families brought back together, and the human spirit and faith somehow endured because of chance occurring at just the right moment.
The Yom HaShoah program will feature:
- Awards presentations to student winners of the Yom HaShoah Creative Arts Contest
- Proclamation reading by a local mayor
- Musical performances by members of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra
- Candle lighting ceremony
- Responsive reading and prayer by local clergy
The Center's programs and events are made possible through generous grants and sponsorships by the Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando, Darden Restaurants Foundation, United Arts of Central Florida, Inc., and State of Florida Department of State - Division of Cultural Affairs, and the Center's generous corporate and individual supporters.
The public is invited. Admission is free.
