The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida has welcomed a new staff member, Bailey Robb, as Program Coordinator for the Upstanders Initiative. Bailey comes to the Holocaust Center after working for two years with Orange County Public Schools, where she tutored in the AVID program at Howard Middle School and served as an AmeriCorps volunteer at Apopka Memorial Middle School.
“Working with middle school students is a unique challenge,” explains Bailey. “I remember being so curious at that age and so easily influenced. Luckily, I was blessed with several adult mentors who helped shape me into the person I am today. I love working with this age group because it gives me the opportunity to be that positive mentor.”
Along with her to desire to teach, Bailey is passionate about social justice, diversity, and youth empowerment. While studying international relations at Rollins College, she took a special interest in human rights and conflict resolution.
“These issues are important to me,” she says, “because they are essential to creating a peaceful world. Our communities are becoming more diverse every day. It is critical for all of us to be educated about tolerance and acceptance so that we may coexist peacefully.”
Bailey says she sees the connection between bullying prevention for teens and the acceptance of diversity in the community at large.
“We begin to develop our opinions of others and how we socialize at an early age,” she says. “Through the Upstanders program, I see the potential to forever mold the way someone treats others. Empathy is at the core of the program.”
The Center’s Executive Director, Pam Kancher, notes that adding Bailey to the staff will greatly benefit the Upstanders Initiative.
“Bailey is an ideal person to help us continue our work,” Kancher says. “She has the background and the enthusiasm, ready to educate young people about what they can do to make a positive difference in their school and in our Central Florida community.”
