During the 2011 Teachers Institute local journalist Greg Dawson shared his mother’s story of survival, and the book he wrote about it titled Hiding in the Spotlight, A Musical Prodigy’s Story about Survival.
A child prodigy who escaped near-certain death, Zhanna — and her equally talented sister, Frina — evaded detection as they played in concerts throughout Europe during the war, sometimes even playing for Nazi officials who were unaware of their Jewish identity.
CMF Public Media was onsite to record and photograph Greg’s 40-minute presentation.
